The William Penn Charter School, an independent college preparatory school, had its beginnings in the Public Grammar School founded in 1689 as a result of instructions from William Penn to the Provincial Council of Pennsylvania. Thomas Lloyd, president of the Council, requested Philadelphia Monthly Meeting to take charge of the matter.
